VEM IE5 synchronous reluctance motors

High efficiency and overload capacity

VEM IE5 synchronous reluctance motors (SynRM) achieve extremely high efficiency across their entire operating range. The motors reach the highest currently defined efficiency class “IE5” (according to IEC-TS 60034-30-2), not only at the rated point but also within a wide range extending from half the rated output up to twice the rated speed.

Reluctance motor is always used with a frequency inverter

VEM reluctance motors are compatible with frequency inverters from all manufacturers suitable for this purpose. We can supply either motors only for your application, or a complete SynRM package solution with a frequency inverter. Motor parameters can be preloaded into the inverter, making the drive ready for immediate installation on site. Our product range also includes SynRM High-speed motors that can run at speeds up to 8000 rpm.

When selecting an inverter type with higher current capacity, the motors can be overloaded with at least 30% higher torque while still maintaining at least IE4 efficiency level. In addition, all motors are capable of operating in the field-weakening range up to 3600 rpm.

Power as needed

Many processes do not require continuous full power. For example, compressed air is only needed intermittently. However, motors in many applications run continuously at constant speed. Often the motor is running all the time, consuming large amounts of energy without producing useful output. The IE5 SynRM combined with a frequency inverter eliminates these problems.

This solution can replace conventional pump, fan, and compressor motors, and is also suitable for more demanding applications such as extruders, mixers, winches, and conveyors. A standard motor can be easily replaced by an IE5 SynRM without mechanical modifications. The sizes and output ratings of IE5 SynRMs comply with common standards.

Advantages of VEM IE5 SynRM

  • In many cases, a smaller motor can be selected due to shorter duty cycles.
  • Lower bearing and winding temperatures increase reliability and service life.

The secret lies in the rotor

The synchronous reluctance motor differs from a conventional squirrel-cage motor in its rotor design. Instead of a squirrel-cage rotor, the SynRM rotor consists only of a laminated steel core with a special geometry, mounted on the shaft. Therefore, there are no permanent magnets, and no copper or aluminum squirrel-cage bars in the rotor. Unlike squirrel-cage motors, SynRMs cannot be operated directly from the mains supply – they must always be driven by a frequency inverter. The Yaskawa GA500 inverter is one suitable option for controlling a synchronous reluctance motor.
